2. Experimental procedures
This study was carried out with an alloy having the
following composition:
Nd12.4–Pr1.4–B5.8–Al0.3–Cu0.1–Co0.1–Fe79.9. The alloy
was produced by the strip casting process from standard
industrial grade raw materials. The thickness of the cast
ribbons was between 0.26 and 0.30 mm. The microstructure
of the cast alloy indicated a highly uniform
spacing of the RE-rich phase within the grain boundaries
of the RE2Fe14B columns (4–6 mm thickness) and
was free of alpha iron dendrites.

The magnets were produced using the classical
powder metallurgy process of sintered magnets and
included a treatment under a pure hydrogen atmosphere,
at room temperature, to decrepitate the alloy
into coarse fragile particles. This was followed by a
partial desorption of hydrogen at an elevated temperature
under vacuum. This created a chemically pre-milled
material in which the main phases are RE2Fe14BH0.2
and RE-H2.2. This pre-milled material was then jetmilled
under a N2 gas flow. The dry powder was
measured using laser diffraction to characterize the
particle size distribution ; D10: 2.6 mm, D50: 6 mm, D90:
11 mm. After homogenization, the powder was filled in a
rubber mold for isostatic compaction. The apparent
density was fixed at 2.8 g/cm3 and the alignment of the
particles made with a maximum 8 T pulsed and repeated
damped magnetic fields in a bitter coil. The compaction
was made under a pressure of 150Mpa in a cold isostatic
press giving cylindrical green compacts of 14mm
diameter, 15mm height. The compacts were vacuum
sintered at a maximum temperature of 10351C for 4 h
after a desorption cycle to evacuate the hydrogen
coming from the decomposition of the RE-H2.2 hydride.
The magnets were then rapidly quenched from the
maximum sintering temperature to room temperature
under an over pressure of Ar gas. Several heat
treatments were applied on the sintered magnets under
vacuum. A post sintering cycle at 8201C for 1 h including
a quench to room temperature and several conditions of
low-temperature annealing, between 4801C and 5801C
for 1 h were employed. Each treatment was followed by
a rapid quench from the treatment temperature with an
over pressure of Ar gas. The intrinsic properties of the
magnets were measured at room temperature with a
hysteresis graph after full magnetization in an external
coil delivering a 4T pulsed magnetic field. The B-J/H
curves in the second quadrant were plotted. The
characterization of the samples by differential scanning
calorimetry (DSC) was performed using 200 mg of
crushed sintered magnets in an alumina box under
protective Ar gas. The maximum temperature was
8001C. The heating and cooling ramps were run at
51C/min
